'The Gripping Tales of Charlie Chainberlain' now on Zempie!

A few days after the end of the GMTK Game Jam 2021, our team were approached by a representative for Zempie, a startup HTML5 free game platform based in Korea, who had a look at GTCC on Itch. They liked the game a lot, and asked us if we could publish our game on their website. Our team agreed, however we did ask certain questions about the legalities of publication, whether we can update the game, and how the platform's focus would develop on a global scale. They were kind enough to answer all of our questions, to the point where our team agreed that we would love to publish our game on Zempie, but not without giving our small project a bit of polish.

The improvements we have made for our game in preparation for publication were mostly quality-of -life stuff. These fixes were based off of the feedback that we received from other developers from the GMTK Game Jam, as well as friends and family who tested out our game. These improvements are listed below:

  • Added a select level screen when you press 'Play'

  • Fixed the movement of movable objects which can get stuck against a wall due to high friction

  • Fixed enemy orientation within the levels

  • Reorder the sorting layers in the levels

  • Optimized & cleaned up the code & deleted unnecessary project/asset files & folders

  • Added a feature that allows the player to play the next dialogue box in cutscenes

  • Added a 'Skip' button so players can skip cutscenes entirely

  • Fixed blurry backgrounds under Settings and Credits menus

  • Add Volume Settings, so now BGM music and SFX can be adjusted

  • Adjusted the screen size when playing the HTML5/WebGL version of the game

With these improvements integrated into the game, GTCC now looks more complete and clean. It was then ready for publication onto Zempie. We created a Developer account on the platform and submitted it for verification. We emailed the representative about our submission, and soon after, our game was verified. At this stage, our team also established a small studio name for ourselves, called 'You Shouldn't Be Here Studios' (YSBH Studios)!

'The Gripping Tales of Charlie Chainberlain' is now playable on Zempie.com! We have also updated the Itch.io page as well, at https://andylang.itch.io/the-gripping-tales-of-charlie-chainberlain.
